I experienced something that made me think “This is a leadership anti-pattern…” so I’d like to share the key points I identified.
When you consult with them, they don’t decide.
However, when you make the decision yourself, they complain.
And since they don’t delegate decision-making authority, you’re stuck.
Since they don’t make decisions, they generally make excuses like “Mr./Ms. XX decided that, so…”
Since they blame others, they have no intention of taking responsibility themselves.
They’re loose with time and casually show up late to meeting times.
And they don’t apologize, perhaps because they don’t feel bad about it.
Overall, they lack a sense of responsibility.
Basically, they only think about themselves.
For example, when sharing an Airbnb with no washing machine, they go to the laundromat without telling anyone, then say “I’m doing laundry now, so please come to the laundromat to get the house key.”
Another example was leaving the workplace without telling anyone to go buy souvenirs for themselves.
Do other people trust them with work?
Are they respected as a person?
If anyone corresponds to this description, please let me know secretly.
These are the “leadership anti-patterns” I identified through recent events.
Rather than “leadership” issues, these were anti-patterns at the level of “I don’t want to work with this person…” weren’t they?
If even one item applies to you, it would be good to improve them one by one.
That’s all from the Gemba.
