I read ‘Never Say You Can’t. Think About How After You Say You Can’ by Dai Tange (『できないとは言わない。できると言った後にどうやるかを考える』丹下大(著)), so I’d like to share the insights I gained from the book.

Background: Wanting to Know About SHIFT Inc.'s Founding President

After reading SHIFT Inc.’s Q4 and Full Year Financial Results Presentation for FY August 2021, I wanted to understand the thinking of the founder and representative director & president, Dai Tange, so I read this book.

Here are quotes and notes from sections that left an impression on me.

Chapter 3: "I wanted to become someone who 'can do it,' so I changed the world around me. About the night I deleted all my friends' phone numbers"

Why Lonely People Want to "Be Useful"

Advocates for motivation that comes from within, such as "excitement" and "enthusiasm," rather than traditional "rewards" or "carrot and stick" approaches, as the new form of motivation that creates a creative and vibrant society. We modern people spontaneously reach out to our surroundings and continue contributing because we want to "be useful to someone."

I want to continue providing opportunities that generate excitement and motivation.

That’s all from the Gemba, where I want to continue providing good opportunities.
