I read ‘The Demise of White-Collar Work: How Should We Change Our Way of Working?’ by Kazuhiko Toyama and would like to share my insights.

“In work with questions and correct answers, humans cannot compete with overwhelming knowledge, logical power, speed, and the ability to work day and night. What remains is only work that poses business questions oneself, creates answer options using generative AI and other tools, and makes decisions - namely ‘boss work.’ This would be what we call middle management positions, but the number of personnel needed there should be an order of magnitude smaller than current middle management.”
📝What remains for white-collar workers is middle management positions.
“The ongoing AI revolution is causing brain replacement. White-collar work in offices is becoming bullshit jobs, and white-collar workers are losing their place. Of course, not all jobs will become bullshit jobs. There won’t be complete replacement. Non-routine work and complex work will remain in human hands. However, since machines and AI will handle a considerable portion of traditional work, the replaced parts will definitely become bullshit jobs.”
📝Most white-collar work will become bullshit jobs.
“If work that previously took 30 minutes can be completed in 10 minutes, the freed 20 minutes can be used for more essential work. This is not a negative cost-reduction activity, but a positive activity that creates value through surplus time. However, the reality is that currently only cost reduction is being focused on.”
📝A perspective I want everyone to have as common understanding.
That’s all from the Gemba, hoping to survive as a white-collar worker without disappearing.
