Translation: For the open source movement, making standardization processes like protocols open and publishing all documentation is essential. In distributed development work like the open source movement, standard documents are used to clarify work specifications. Without standard documents, development unity cannot be achieved, and work becomes scattered and unmanageable. Open standards, open documentation, and open source are inherently partners. This partnership that created the Internet will surely accomplish many more great achievements.

多くの開発プログラマにとって、エンジニアを創業者とし、オープンソースのビジネスモデルにのっとり独自の文化を構築しながら、オープンソースの世界をリードする技術者集団を率いるシグナスソリューションズ社で働けることは、非常に魅力的な話だった。そのため、わが社におけるエンジニアの離職率は、全国平均（とりわけシリコンバレーの平均）の四分の一から十分の一ほどであった。
Translation: For many development programmers, working at Cygnus Solutions—founded by engineers, following an open source business model, building its own culture while leading a group of technicians in the open source world—was very attractive. Translation: Brands can be a powerful force in businesses that sell technical capabilities. As evidence, several venture capitals have recently invested in open source software-related businesses. So far, all such investment targets share common characteristics: high recognition of the company or its products, and recognized product quality. In short, companies that have successfully established their brands.
📝 Brand establishment is key.
企業は、開発プロジェクトの救済を目的としてオープンソースの採用を検討するかもしれない。知名度を上げることを考えてそうするかもしれない。あるいは、ひとつの製品に有終の美を飾らせるためにそうするかもしれない。しかし、これらはいずれも、オープンソース方式を採用する理由としては適切でない。オープンソース方式の採用にあたっては、どのような製品であったらオープンソースとして成功するかを独自に調査し、その結果を厳密に検討しなければならない。
Translation: Companies might consider adopting open source to rescue development projects, to increase recognition, or to give a product a graceful ending. However, none of these are appropriate reasons for adopting the open source approach. When adopting the open source approach, you must independently research what kind of products would succeed as open source and carefully examine the results.

This book provides valuable insights into the history and business aspects of open source software. Even 25 years after its publication, many of the perspectives remain relevant.
